THE CHARTER
The story of the city
Every city has a founding story. Ours begins with a word from Jesus: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
ARTICLE 0 — THE NAME
Why “The Believers City”?
DRAFT (replace with the real founding story — INTAKE-03): The Believers City began as a handful of families in Port Harcourt who believed the church is not a building you visit but a city you belong to — a people whose shared life makes the goodness of God visible from a distance.
We take our name from Matthew 5:14 and Hebrews 11:10. A city is what we are; believers is who we are. Everything here — from how we worship to how we welcome strangers — flows from those two words.
THE FOUNDATIONS
The Charter — what we believe
DRAFT — for pastoral review (INTAKE-04): these nine articles are the foundations the city is built on.
ARTICLE I
The Scriptures
We believe the Bible — all sixty-six books — is the inspired, trustworthy Word of God: the city’s charter, the final authority for what we believe and how we live.
ARTICLE II
God
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — the Architect and Builder of the city whose foundations cannot be shaken.
ARTICLE III
Jesus Christ
We believe Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man: born of a virgin, sinless in life, crucified for our sins, bodily risen, ascended, and coming again. He is the King of the city.
ARTICLE IV
The Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit indwells and empowers every believer — convicting, comforting, gifting and sending us as light into the world.
ARTICLE V
Salvation
We believe salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone — not earned by works, but received as a gift, and evidenced by a changed life.
ARTICLE VI
The Church
We believe the Church is the gathered people of God — a city within the city — called to worship, to one another, and to the world.
ARTICLE VII
Baptism & Communion
We practice believer’s baptism by immersion and share the Lord’s Supper regularly — the gate of public confession and the table of ongoing fellowship.
ARTICLE VIII
The Mission
We believe every believer is sent. The city does not exist for itself: we make disciples in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and to the ends of the earth.
ARTICLE IX
The Hope
We believe Christ will return, the dead will be raised, and God will dwell with His people in the city whose lamp is the Lamb. We live now in the light of then.
